  Mother Earth’s natural perfume Yesterday it drizzled in the morning. The soothing smell of the damp ground reached my nostrils after months. Rain is the earth’s natural fragrance. Clay, sandy, silty, peaty, chalky, loamy- when fresh rain kisses these soils when dry,   different scents are born. These aromas evolve further when they weave themselves on invisible strings with the vegetation that drapes the earth. Different vegetation will bestow their unique perfumes. If the air is clean, these smells may be purer, maybe heavenly.   First Drizzle This morning [26 May 2022] when I was asleep, the parched earth in my neighbourhood received its first pre-monsoon drizzle. More clouds are making their welcome arrival in the sky above. They’ll gradually drape themselves in greyer hues. Then the dance drama of the cloud kingdom will start when it will shower its mercy on the ground below. The years were grotesque and I live with trauma triggers daily. Most people, including psychologists I visited, were clueless about what narcissistic abuse does to people. I was shamed further by them instead of soothed. Many of them caused further hurt. Helplines were the worst, they fumbled while counselling me, said they couldn’t make sense of what I had gone through, asked inane questions and gave me generalized coping methods which don’t apply to survivors of narcissistic abuse. His brothers didn’t want to shelter him as he is an alcoholic. His aunt wasn’t ready to accommodate him as the evening before he consumed pesticide, he had lost their bicycle. The villagers of that neighbourhood were getting ready to gather as a mob and beat him as suicide is a sin according to them. Penniless, he went to one of his brother’s home and started drinking and getting drunk again much to his sister-in-law’s annoyance. They feel that the best way to solve this fast is to get him married. He has a five-year-old son from a previous girlfriend.   Endless summer ending Monsoon has arrived in India I grew up in Kolkata, where our school was closed for summer vacation during this time. We’d go for trips to nearby places during this season or stay in the city where we’d swim daily, often in a lake full of snakes, fishes and frogs. Our family travelled to the tiny and calm hill station of Mirik which is one of the most memorable travels of my lifetime.   Penguin’s birthday, Buddha Purnima, Lunar Eclipse, Blood Moon! Four dramatic events are coinciding on this day. Penguin [@indian.devil.angel] who has been named so by me for his honey saturated cuteness has his birthday today. This is the sweet boy whom I had noticed a decade ago being grumpy on social media on every birthday. I was too shy to send him a friend’s request or communicate with him.   Man consumes pesticide As I write this, a young man is fighting for his life. He is an alcoholic and is always in and out of jail. This morning he put pesticide in his spirit and drank it. His body is turning cold and he can hardly breathe. He is in a queue for admission to the hospital for the poor where detailed paperwork is going on as protocols dictate that a police case must be registered before further proceeding. These rules delay saving those who attempt suicide. We aren’t sure if this was accidental or deliberate mixing. The treatment of patients who try to take their lives is shocking in supposedly good private hospitals as well. In one of these places, the person who attempted it was slapped several times by the doctor and as he felt that an evil person like this deserves mistreatment, ward boys were ordered to strip her naked to change her into a gown as there was no nurse at the emergency room.   Summer of 2022 This is a summer that Indians will not forget. We are all together in this cauldron in different ways. When the pandemic started, messages flooded social media that we are all suffering to the same degree during this time. This was a highly ableist comment because some were uploading pictures claiming to be atop the spirituality barometer writing, “This time is God sent, I hope it never ends.” Many of them in their air conditioned homes were relishing gourmet meals, exercising in their multi-gym and had ample money. Elsewhere the story was different. Many had lost their jobs, were facing domestic violence, couldn’t source necessities where they lived, were dying, etc. Please try to understand that we are all tormented by this heat in different proportions as per our level of privilege.
