Summer of 2022
This is a summer that Indians will not forget. We are all
together in this cauldron in different ways. When the pandemic started,
messages flooded social media that we are all suffering to the same degree
during this time. This was a highly ableist comment because some were uploading
pictures claiming to be atop the spirituality barometer writing, “This time is
God sent, I hope it never ends.” Many of them in their air conditioned homes
were relishing gourmet meals, exercising in their multi-gym and had ample
money. Elsewhere the story was different. Many had lost their jobs, were facing
domestic violence, couldn’t source necessities where they lived, were dying,
etc.
Please try to understand that we are all tormented by
this heat in different proportions as per our level of privilege. I’ve seen
lifestyle bloggers who are wearing sweaters this summer and getting many likes.
Their daily routine is staying in an air conditioned room all day, then
stepping into an air conditioned car and then going to a place where again
there’s cooling. They are being lauded as positive and spiritual people on
social media for not complaining about the heat. Those who are suffering this
summer are being shamed for spreading negativity on social media.
People who have to work outdoors throughout the day are
dying because of the heat and not getting enough water not just to bathe in but
to drink. They live in poorly ventilated homes with no fans.
I’m from a
middle-class family living in a town with water shortages and power cuts. I don’t
have air conditioning and endure ailments that make me sweat. Many privileged
people aren’t even aware of the newspapers publishing reports about the coal
crisis causing electricity shortage and the long power cuts in towns and
villages. The richest neighbourhoods of the city always have power and air
conditioning running all the time. These people who are often clueless about
others’ hardships are celebrated by the toxic positivity battalion as they are
not grumbling.
Climate change is real and we need to tackle this
together to avoid extreme weather. Deniers of climate change are in the
majority.
On getting my salary, I bought these home clothes to
make me endure the rest of summer. In many puritanical homes, women are
sweating in saris in the hot kitchen. I am also using the gifts from my friend’s
stock. Today, I started using the tubes of herbal toothpaste that I redeemed
from the voucher. I’m following the news of the monsoon which is soon to onset.
It should be here in my town in a month.
