Why is the ocean blue?
Level: Primary School
Aim: To explain the scientific reason for the blue ocean after
teaching them the poem Washday by Elizabeth F. Upson
1.
You have learned how the
seven colours of violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red make the
seven colours of the rainbow.
2.
You see a rainbow in the
sky when sunlight is spread out by raindrops.
3.
Look around at the objects
around you.
4.
What colours are they?
....................................................................
5.
Do you know why different
objects seem to be of different colours?
.........................................................................
6.
Every object absorbs
[soaks in] or reflects [throws back] light.
7.
The ocean seems blue to
you as it reflects blue light and swallows up the rest of the colours.
8.
Sometimes the sea looks
green because of the plants in it.
9.
Have you seen the sea glow
with other colours?
..........................................................................................
10.
Deep down into the sea,
you’ll find darkness only as light can’t reach so far.
