Falling behind time

A former boss sent me a diagram of various vertical black bars in a sequence. They are growing progressively shorter. Through this image, he wished to illustrate that we are constantly running out of time.

Time races ahead at a galloping pace. We are to adjust our schedule within its agitated tempo. We bolt our breakfast to catch a crowded fast train to work. Office goers rush up the stairs to punch in their cards, if they are a second beyond the entry time, they get a black mark for not being punctual. Micromanaged by the electronic eyes of CCTV cameras, we try hard to meet daily deadlines. We may drive back home through the serpent-like traffic, each commuter being in a hurry to reach home for a few winks of sleep to be harked by the shrill alarm bell after sunrise to begin our daily dash.

I’m reminded of the poem Leisure by William Henry Davies

What is this life if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs

And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,

Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,

And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can

Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare.

  Old English 1500 years ago, in the 5 th century CE, a Germanic tribe, the Angles, traversed the North Sea to invade Britain. The earliest of these attacks was in 449 CE. Later, the Saxons and Jutes did the same. These tribes lived in what we now know as northern Germany and Denmark. The Germanic dialects of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes were the languages that gave birth to a new language in Britain, the English language. This language is called Old English or Anglo-Saxon. The erstwhile home of the Angles was called ‘ Englaland’. Their language was known as ‘Englisc’. The words ‘England’ and ‘English’ were formed from these old words. These invading tribes fought with the Celtic inhabitants of the country. Most of them were slaughtered or enslaved. Some were fortunate to have fled to the safety of Wales, Ireland and Scotland.   Man consumes pesticide As I write this, a young man is fighting for his life. He is an alcoholic and is always in and out of jail. This morning he put pesticide in his spirit and drank it. His body is turning cold and he can hardly breathe. He is in a queue for admission to the hospital for the poor where detailed paperwork is going on as protocols dictate that a police case must be registered before further proceeding. These rules delay saving those who attempt suicide. We aren’t sure if this was accidental or deliberate mixing. The treatment of patients who try to take their lives is shocking in supposedly good private hospitals as well. In one of these places, the person who attempted it was slapped several times by the doctor and as he felt that an evil person like this deserves mistreatment, ward boys were ordered to strip her naked to change her into a gown as there was no nurse at the emergency room.
