Ocean of time

Though my school friend cannot pinpoint the reason, when she hears the word ‘time’, the picture of a rolling sea with ebb and tide sweeps into her mind’s eye. The crests of the waves may represent highs, and the troughs lows in life. This vast body of brine conjures an image of the immensity of time. Its depths are a repertoire of amazing flora and fauna. Under the billows of time lie so many events.

The present is maybe the sea shores from where we gaze at the ocean blue. We dip our feet in the surf that tickles the beach where now blends into what is to come right after. When we allow the grains of sand to run through our fingers, our tactile sensation may remind us of how quickly time trickles by. On putting a sea shell to our ear we hear the swirling echo of the air around us. We may imagine that we are listening to the unending melody of time dancing around us. When we see volcanoes arising from seas they may remind us that from time’s craters tumultuous events erupt.

 Perhaps the future is beyond the far horizon. We may only look on at the imaginary line where the aqua meets the welkin thereby merging two shades of azure, while we imagine what is to come next. When the sun sinks into the sea in the evening, we may think of the present smoothly sliding into the past. That’s why it’s a convention to visit the beach on New Year’s eve to savour the last sunset of the year.

When the moon rises from the craggy rocks and the stars twinkle, the horizon may symbolize the mysteries of time looming around us. Come dawn, the reds and oranges in the sky above give us hope of the sweeter moments that time will bring to us.

  Old English 1500 years ago, in the 5 th century CE, a Germanic tribe, the Angles, traversed the North Sea to invade Britain. The earliest of these attacks was in 449 CE. Later, the Saxons and Jutes did the same. These tribes lived in what we now know as northern Germany and Denmark. The Germanic dialects of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes were the languages that gave birth to a new language in Britain, the English language. This language is called Old English or Anglo-Saxon.   Man consumes pesticide As I write this, a young man is fighting for his life. He is an alcoholic and is always in and out of jail. This morning he put pesticide in his spirit and drank it. His body is turning cold and he can hardly breathe. He is in a queue for admission to the hospital for the poor where detailed paperwork is going on as protocols dictate that a police case must be registered before further proceeding. These rules delay saving those who attempt suicide. We aren’t sure if this was accidental or deliberate mixing. The treatment of patients who try to take their lives is shocking in supposedly good private hospitals as well. In one of these places, the person who attempted it was slapped several times by the doctor and as he felt that an evil person like this deserves mistreatment, ward boys were ordered to strip her naked to change her into a gown as there was no nurse at the emergency room.
