Shiva and Dionysus

The Greek god of wine and fertility, Dionysus may be linked with frenzy and intoxication. This god has a dual personality. His passion for wine can elevate him to ecstasy. His wrath can bring forth destruction. Ever since the first millennium BCE, the Mycenaean Greeks began worshipping him.

Dionysus resonates with Shiva as he too has benevolence and malevolence on both sides of the coin of his godly nature. He resides in the Himalayan abode of Kailash with his dear wife Parvati, this etches a picture of sweet domesticity. However, he is the god of destruction and can kill demons. He like the Greek god is associated with inebriation and ingenious delirium. He has the prowess to destroy and create.
