Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

SPOILER ALERT

This Victorian Gothic novel, a literary masterpiece, set in the desolate Yorkshire moors is one of the most passionate romances that have ever been authored. In this rugged moor arises conflict from contrasts. Wuthering Heights, the mansion where the Earnshaws live is dark, dreary and wild. Thrushcross Grange, occupied by the Lintons is serene and socially sophisticated. A union arises between these polar opposite residences escalating drama.

Heathcliff is a far cry from a conventional soft-spoken romantic hero. A brutal childhood and losing the woman he loves leads to his metamorphosis into a Machiavellian Byronic hero. Introduced in the novel as a vulnerable orphan, he evolves into an obsessively revengeful persona. Interestingly, this transition happens when he escalates his social status to a gentleman. The novel culminates with his bohemian afterlife soul eternally roaming the moors with the spirit of his lady-love Cathy.

Both of them seem to find an uncanny peace through their phantom-like existence. After Heathcliff’s death order is restored in this novel which could have culminated in a tragic ending. Young lovers, Catherine and Hareton, who didn’t find serenity previously, marry, to go on to live happily ever after.

The novel has a striking feminist angle, which is less explored. Cathy’s brother Hindley leaves for higher education. Meanwhile, she like Victorian girls is home-schooled. If she had a university degree, she would be able to earn her bread instead of having to marry the wealthy Linton she didn’t love. This separates her from Heathcliff who rises to affluence to prove himself. Ruthless shades are added to him during his financially upward journey, altering him to a sinister personality.
