The Magical Andes

1.  Nestled in South America, it is the longest mountain range in the world.

2.  It stretches from north to south, along the west of the continent, not far from the Pacific coast.

3.  Years ago, geological forces raised the bed of the Pacific Ocean to give birth to this mountain range.

4.  It is rich in mineral wealth including platinum, gold, silver and emeralds.

5.  Many Andean peaks are loftier than most mountains in North America.

6.  Human beings have been living in the Andes for more than 10,000 years.

7.  The Inca Civilisation was a highly developed one, they constructed roads through mountain passes, and cities spread out on the valleys.

8.  Most of the current Andes dwellers are farmers growing corn, potatoes and beans.

9.  Some are weavers and ceramics artists.

10.                   Rainforests would cover the northern Andes, deforestation has reduced the green cover.

11.                   The Andes mountains house a vibrant range of wildlife. Some of the animals spotted here include the Vicuña, Mountain Tapir, Guinea Pig, South American Fox, Spectacled Bear, Yellow-Tailed Woolly Monkey, Taruca, Huemul, Llama, Alpaca, Chinchilla, Guanaco, Flamingo etc.

12.                    150 to 160 active volcanoes are cloistered in the Andean range, forming a part of the trail of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

  Man consumes pesticide As I write this, a young man is fighting for his life. He is an alcoholic and is always in and out of jail. This morning he put pesticide in his spirit and drank it. His body is turning cold and he can hardly breathe. He is in a queue for admission to the hospital for the poor where detailed paperwork is going on as protocols dictate that a police case must be registered before further proceeding. These rules delay saving those who attempt suicide. We aren’t sure if this was accidental or deliberate mixing. The treatment of patients who try to take their lives is shocking in supposedly good private hospitals as well. In one of these places, the person who attempted it was slapped several times by the doctor and as he felt that an evil person like this deserves mistreatment, ward boys were ordered to strip her naked to change her into a gown as there was no nurse at the emergency room.
