Love your skin tone [Dr.Nirmala Shetty]

In 2021, sadly skin lightening is still a craze, especially among women. Emphasizing that complexion is dependent on genetics, Nirmala says, “One shouldn’t believe that one’s complexion can be changed. One can only remove a tan. Dark-skinned girls and women need to accept their skin tone as a beautiful colour and live with it as I did. I learnt to love my complexion as I grew up. It is upsetting that our society at large doesn’t accept dark skin colour. People have been appreciating the light complexion of Westerners instead. The Indian complexion is so good, it has melanin which can tackle ageing.”

She is against skin bleaching. She warns, “Once you start doing so, you get into the habit of it. It only brightens your skin and the hair on it looks golden. Some feel that this gives them a better appearance but one of its side-effects is pigmentation issues, which may turn into a persistent problem. Bleaching your skin repeatedly is harmful. If you do so once or twice, the skin tries to renew itself from the chemical procedure. Doing so regularly can definitely be harmful.”
