Reiki for kids

When one thinks of holistic practises like yoga, Reiki and meditation; one generally associates adults with them. The truth is that holistic practices may start at an early age.

Reiki is an alternate form of healing that involves transferring positive energy or chi through one’s palms. Those who have faith in Reiki, think that a child can benefit from it when she/ he is in an embryonic state in her/ his mother’s womb. All a pregnant lady has to do is place a hand on her tummy to transfer the soothing Reiki energy to her unborn baby- it is believed by Reiki practitioners that this helps in giving birth to a calm baby.

According to Reiki master and counselling psychologist Aarti Gupta, a child can learn Reiki from when she/ he is four or five years old. She simplifies the concept of Reiki through fun and games for the kids. She explains about the seven chakras or energy vortexes in the human body by making the kids colour the chakras with crayon colours that match the vortexes. “I draw a parallel to the seven colours of the rainbow and the chakra colours. When I tell them to colour the throat chakra, I remind them of the blue sky. While colouring the crown chakra, I remind them of the colour of aubergine. I ask them to colour pebbles and put them on the appropriate chakra.”

Reiki master Avani Patel says, “A simple to-the-point syllabus needs to be formulated for kids. After the course is over, feedback has to be taken every month on how they are progressing.”

The benefits of learning Reiki are many. Aarti explains, “It helps a child to improve memory and concentration. It betters both physical and mental development. It makes kids courageous thereby reducing or eliminating nervousness.”

Avani adds, “Reiki helps kids in improving concentration in studies. It enables self-purification so that they grow with the correct values. They will develop a strong aura (emanation) wherein they can eliminate negativity and enhance positivity.”

Children being innocent and pure are very receptive towards Reiki. Initiating a child into this practice may be a delightful part of her/ his spiritual journey.
