History of the Popeye cartoon

This lovable sailor whose tonic is a can of spinach was the brainchild of Elzie Crisler Segar. In 1929, he sketched the first cartoon strip about him, naming it as Thimble Theatre. This adorable character was actually created a decade ago in 1919 when the cartoonist took a drawing correspondence course from a man in Cleveland. He based Popeye on Frank Fiegel. He had eyesight in one eye, smoked pipes, got himself into brawls, and never turned down a fight.
