Rainy evenings

When it’s pouring cats and dogs, my felines hide in a warm and dry nook of our building. That doesn’t prevent them from coming to my doorstep for supper with mews to announce the same. One of the society’s cats would swim through the water to turn up on time for meals.

When the weather was dry, it drizzled or rained lightly, the joyous voices of our housing society’s children would waft through the evening breeze. These merry vocalizations are heavenly to my ears. Now during the dark evenings of heaviest rainfall, no child plays in the garden. The inky evenings are sombre and silent except for the rhythmic sound of the lashing rain.

The kids may be watching the rain from their windows like I am. Their mothers will be cooking hot piping crunchy evening snacks and yummy dinner for them. They may be waiting anxiously for their parents to return from work trudging through waterlogged streets enmeshed in traffic snarls and standing in crowded trains stranded because the railway tracks are flooded. They are waiting for hours in a queue for transportation.

Mashi has brought the news from her friend that the salt pan bogs of our neighbourhood have overflowed submerging the street that runs through them. She often brings wrong news. I am not going out now to verify the same. No construction can be made on these lands that are the only lungs of my locality. During the monsoon, they transform into salty rippling lakes of clear water. Clouds hug the hills which have turned from brown to green after the monsoon set in.

Come evening, the electricity will be snapped off whenever the crescendo of the rain increases, plunging our complex into darkness. Mashi will grumble when the TV screen is covered by a cloud image indicating that bad weather has cut off the satellite connection. After all, her soaps are always bubbling with drama. Occasionally, the internet will be deactivated.

What’s a rainy evening like for you? It’s hard for the poor and those who have to stay outdoors because of jobs.

Octopus 1.     You may often have heard someone proudly saying that he has blue blood running through his veins. 2.     This figuratively means that he is the descendant of a royal dynasty. 3.     Did you know that a creature living in the deep blue ocean really has blue-coloured blood? 4.     We are talking about the mollusc, the eight-legged octopus here. 5.     Octopuses are natural marine architects which build homes for themselves with rocks. 6.     With their powerful arms, they can easily shift rocks from one venue to another. 7.     Their rock den abodes have a stone door entrance which the octopus can lock after it safely enters its sweet home. 8.     Even after they are securely at home, they are better off without visitors. 9.     They disperse shells and rocks to carefully conceal themselves within their dens. 10. ...

How are British and American English different? Many countries speak English in 2021. The language has imbibed the local flavours and quirks of the various nations that they are spoken in. This has given birth to myriad hybrids of the English language. The two main demarcations of the language are British and American English. British English American English British English is centuries older than American English. The British arrived at the New World in 1607 CE. Their foremost permanent residential colony was at Jamestown.   British like to retain more letters than Americans do while spelling words. ‘Colour’, ‘aeroplane’, ‘programme’, ‘behaviour’ and ‘humour’ are British spellings. Americans omit letters while spelling certain words. ‘Color’, ‘airplane’, ‘program’, ‘behavior’ and ‘humor’ are American spellings.   These are some British English spellings: ‘tyre’, ‘grey’, ‘...

The White-Footed Deer Poem by William Cullen Bryant   It was a hundred years ago, When, by the woodland ways, The traveller saw the wild deer drink, Or crop the birchen sprays.   Beneath a hill, whose rocky side O'erbrowed a grassy mead, And fenced a cottage from the wind, A deer was wont to feed.   She only came when on the cliffs The evening moonlight lay, And no man knew the secret haunts In which she walked by day.   White were her feet, her forehead showed A spot of silvery white, That seemed to glimmer like a star In autumn's hazy night.   And here, when sang the whippoorwill, She cropped the sprouting leaves, And here her rustling steps were heard On still October eves.   But when the broad midsummer moon Rose o'er that grassy lawn, Beside the silver-footed deer There grazed a spotted fawn.   The cottage dame forbade her son To aim the rifle here; 'It were a sin,' she s...
