Children in the Victorian Age

In 2021, urban kids from well-to-do families are growing up with online classes, playtime with masks and chatting virtually with their friends. Underprivileged children may not be able to access digital classes, could be helping their parents with household chores and often cannot eat nutritious food.

Do you know how differently rich and poor children in Victorian England lived? Queen Victoria ruled Great Britain from 1837 to 1901, that’s the span of the Victorian Age.

Poor Victorian children

Rich Victorian children

As most of them didn’t study in schools, they were unable to read and write. Many of them worked with little pay and for long hours. You even saw them as employees in mines and factories. They lived in unhygienic conditions and some of them died of illnesses.

Children were homeschooled by a governess. They lived in big houses and were raised by nurses and nannies. They followed strict daily timetables and had to abide by meticulous discipline.   Boys were sent to boarding school when they were ten years old. They were well-nourished, clean and wore expensive clothes. These kids went on vacations and had a nursery full of costly toys.

Victorian children were expected to listen to God, their parents, teachers and elders. They were supposed to be loyal to Queen Victorian’s throne. Rich Victorians trained their kids in social etiquette and mannerisms. They felt that acquiring these skills helped to set themselves apart from the poor whom the rich thought of as uncultured.

I’ll teach you a poem about a Victorian child from a privileged family and his curious little companion who is almost always stuck to his heels. Who do you think his mate may be?
